A Cirrus SR-22 ferry flight from California to Hawaii ditched hundreds of miles off the coast of Maui.
The aircraft had a mechanical problem with its reserve fuel tanks, which were on board to make the 2,300+ NM flight possible. After coordinating with the Coast Guard, the SR-22 pilot was able to fly toward a cruise ship that was bound for Hawaii, pull the chute, and get picked up by a rescue boat in less than 30 minutes.
This was some excellent work and coordination by the pilot, cruise ship, and the US Coast Guard. And, it’s another great example of how the Cirrus CAPS parachute system can turn a bad situation into a manageable one.
